All Wood changes color after milling
If you’ve ever milled a board and been surprised by the colors that suddenly appeared, you’re not alone. That deep rich red tone of Cherry? Nope. Its actually a light pink when freshly planed that turns red brown with a few hours in the sun or even a few days just oxidizing. Oaks will turn a deeper brown from the light tan of freshly milled. This goes on and on with every species. When you consider exotic woods that grow in rainforests, the oil and resin content in the wood is substantially higher which produces explosions of unexpected colors.
Take everyone’s favorite color changing species: Teak. One minute the rough sawn board looks like a consistent golden brown. The next, it’s covered in streaks of orange, cream, pink, green, and dark brown. For woodworkers, flooring installers, and homeowners seeing teak for the first time, it can be alarming. But the good news is that what you’re seeing is completely normal, and in most cases, temporary.

- Dark brown or chocolate-colored areas

It is alarming when colors that were never present suddenly show up when you freshly sand or plane a board. And it doesn’t take a lot of sanding before those colors start to arrive.
Why Sunlight Helps change Teak Colors
Anyone who has worked with teak knows that time is often the best finishing tool. Ultraviolet light and oxygen gradually break down and oxidize the compounds responsible for many of the extreme color differences. As this occurs, the wood begins to settle into a more unified appearance.
At McIlvain, we’ve occasionally accelerated this process by laying large teak orders out in direct sunlight before shipment. By “suntanning” the material, boards begin blending together naturally, reducing the contrast between neighboring pieces. The result is a more harmonious color palette without altering the natural beauty that makes teak so desirable.
The Problem With Waiting
Of course, not every project has the luxury of time. A flooring installer may have days, not weeks, before the finish must be applied. A furniture maker may need to complete a project on a client’s deadline. To complicate matters further, sanding can reintroduce color variation. Even if a floor has been exposed to sunlight and appears nicely blended, the final sanding before finishing can expose fresh wood fibers, causing those dramatic colors to return.
That’s when many woodworkers start looking for a way to accelerate the natural aging process.
Mimicking the Effects of Sunlight
The same chemical reaction that occurs during sun exposure can also be encouraged through oxidation. UV light works by altering and oxidizing color-producing compounds known as chromophores. Certain oxidizing agents can produce a similar effect on the wood surface. In the accompanying video, we experimented with a readily available bleach gel product containing oxidizing chemicals. Applied to freshly milled teak and allowed to dwell for approximately ten minutes, the treatment noticeably reduced some of the extreme color contrasts.
The results included:
- Lighter cream areas becoming more honey-colored
- Pink tones diminishing
- Green undertones fading
- Dark sections becoming less intense
- Overall improvement in color consistency between boards
The wood still retained its natural variation, but the palette became significantly more cohesive.
The Importance of Managing Expectations
It’s important to remember that wood is a natural product, not a manufactured surface. No chemical treatment, stain, or finishing technique will make every teak board identical. Nor should it. The beauty of teak lies in its variation, character, and individuality. The goal is not to eliminate those differences. The goal is to reduce distracting contrasts and create a more balanced appearance across the project. Even after treatment, subtle variation remains, preserving the organic look that makes real wood floors and furniture so appealing.
What Happens After Finishing?
Perhaps the most interesting observation is what happens when finish is applied. Once a clear varnish or oil-based finish is added, the colors often come together even further. The finish enhances depth and richness while helping neighboring boards visually blend. Combined with continued exposure to indoor light and oxygen, the color transformation continues long after installation. In fact, given enough time, nature will accomplish most of the work on its own.
A Practical Shortcut for Teak Projects
The bleaching method demonstrated in the video is not a replacement for natural aging. Rather, it’s a shortcut. In roughly ten minutes, the treatment produced a color shift comparable to what might occur after several days of direct sunlight exposure. For projects facing tight deadlines, that head start can make a significant difference. That said, stronger bleaching products exist and should be handled with extreme caution. Always follow manufacturer recommendations, test on sample pieces first, and ensure proper safety procedures are followed.
The Wood Color Change Bottom Line
If freshly milled teak looks chaotic, don’t panic. The dramatic streaks, color shifts, and tonal variation are a natural result of exposing the wood’s oils, minerals, and extractives. Given time, light, and oxygen, those colors will gradually mellow and blend into the warm, golden appearance that has made teak one of the world’s most sought-after hardwoods. And if you’re in a hurry? A carefully applied oxidizing treatment may help fast-track the process and bring those boards into a more harmonious color range before the finish goes on.
That’s one more reminder that when it comes to wood, patience is usually the best solution. But sometimes a little chemistry can give nature a head start.
