Composite Cladding that Won’t Fade and Is Practically Maintenance Free
For years we have researched and tested a variety of composite and synthetic products for exterior applications.
As a traditional hardwood supplier we are decidedly biased toward natural woods but cannot deny the science and advances made with composite products in the last decade. Moreover the amount of recycled material diverted from landfills to make these products is a compelling story. But we love and stand by natural wood! So to provide a composite cladding product to our customers it needed not only to out perform natural hardwoods but be beautiful and color fast as well. We found that solution with Fiberon composite cladding.
Fiberon cladding is a 94% recycled product that is completely water resistant. It has a molecularly bonded ethylene cap over wood flour composite core creating an exceptionally durable and stable board. We visited the Fiberon manufacturing plant and saw the recycled plastics handling, the extrusion lines and especially important, the testing metrology lab. These boards are tested in boiling water for 6 months with no degradation or delamination. They are broken, heated, beaten, yelled at and generally made to feel really bad and yet they remain strong, water resistant and the same color as the day it was installed.
The manufacturing lead time is short and quality control outstanding so that we feel confident we can provide the material to our broad range of customers from coast to coast without question as to meeting deadlines or concerns about quality. In the end one of the most appealing aspects of this composite cladding is the ease of installation and the maintenance free aspect. That last point is probably the most compelling on commercial installations with a lot of wear and tear.
Two Styles in 8 Different Colors
One of the key differentiators with Fiberon cladding is that the boards are embossed on both faces making them great for applications where both sides are visible like wind breaks and privacy screens. Moreover with multiple embossing patterns and different patterns on each face the boards are reversible during installation to give you the most appealing and natural look. The dyes are added during the extrusion process and are varied enough to give you a natural streaking similar to real wood unlike a lot of composite products that just look plastic.

Rainscreen Cladding to Keep You Dry
Rainscreen systems are not a new idea and have been around since ancient Roman times. In short, an air gap is created between the outer wall and the inner wall. The moisture from the elements collects on the outer wall and drains out the bottom without ever coming into contact with the inner wall. This vapor barrier need only be about 3/8″ wide to be effective.
Additionally, the gap between the cladding boards creates a pressure differential as air passes through an into the air gap that essentially sets up a convection drying system. Not only is the exterior cladding water resistant so that it sheds, rather than absorbs moisture, but the convection behind almost sucks the moisture away and dries it fast.
There are a variety of rainscreen fastening systems available on the market and we can help you to put together a complete package for your specific installation. We have not found one perfect combination of furring and clip or fastener to outshine everything else but instead have better success customizing the approach to your specific project. Regardless, Fiberon cladding works great with just about any manufacturer’s clip and furring system and there are partnerships in place already to make supplying a total package delivered to your job site an easy process.
Not Just Composite SidingThe interesting side effect to an easy to install, eco friendly, color fast, water resistant product is that architects are now starting to specify it in many different ways. The cladding is really just decking run up the walls and onto the ceiling so more and more we are seeing it being used in a variety of ways.
The boards are bendable and several installations have taken this into account with interesting coved ceilings and rounded wall corners. Obviously this is an exterior product but because it is as attractive as natural wood, several projects have incorporated cladding on the interior as well as the exterior. The fact that you can run the same product from inside to outside creates some really cool statements and warmth to an otherwise steel and glass dominated design. Used vertically or horizontally and even mixed and matched in color and thickness can create all kinds of shadow lines and sculptural details for stunning effect. Again the varied color streaking and non repeating embossed pattern provides a lot of flexibility for these more creative applications.
