J. Gibson McIlvain Company is committed to responsible sourcing of domestic and exotic lumber. We take our role as a responsible distributor very seriously, so we take an active role in many organizations that encourage responsible forestry practices, promote well managed forests, and provide international networking opportunities for companies who are environmentally conscious.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification
"Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way" (http://www.fscus.org/faqs/what_is_fsc.php). Unfortunately, all the products that we sell cannot be FSC Certified. However, we do make an effort to buy FSC Certified products when they are available.
Participant in Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
"CITES is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival" (http://www.cites.org/eng/disc/what.shtml). J. Gibson McIlvain Company always confirms that its purchases are in line with this international agreement which ensures the sustainability of all the products that we sell.
International Wood Products Association (IWPA) Member
"The International Wood Products Association (IWPA) and its members support the development and implementation of responsible and constructive logging laws and forest management regulations in all timber-producing regions. IWPA promotes compliance, by all parties, with national, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to logging and forest management. IWPA members condemn the violation of such laws and commit to purchase products only from suppliers and/or individuals who are in support of this policy" (www.iwpa.org).
ATIBT Membership
"The ATIBT promotes the development of the legal, ethical and sustainable trade in tropical timber as a natural renewable resource, that for producing countries is essential for socio-economic development…" (Annuaire ATIBT Directory 2007-2008, p. 8).
